Read more of the storyStraight from the Kandal province of Cambodia, the MAHILA rug will breeze its way into your interior like a temperate wind from distant lands. Available in two unique patterns, IKAT and PISA, each piece is hand-woven from river bulrushes.
It is a work that requires both time and patience. The bulrushes are first collected and sorted, before being dyed and left to dry. It is only then, that they can be woven by hand in a process that takes two days. A living design, this rug will evolve over time.
The colour will develop a patina from the sun. Its unique motifs are bordered by a fine black fringing, which forms a frame around the design. Woven according to an age-old tradition, each piece is carefully crafted by women in their own homes or more precisely, in the ateliers located under the stilts of their houses. Working at home not only gives free rein to these women’s creativity and talent, it also removes them from the sometimes difficult conditions of factories.
