Read more of the storyThe Leya cushion cover is distinguished by its fascinating patterns, which combine bright colours and deep hues.
Made in India using the traditional "cutwork" technique: the black fabric is first fixed to the natural canvas, then the pattern is cut out by hand to create the design and reveal the fabric underneath.
The design to be cut out is printed on the black fabric using an ink that is then washed off.
The black fabric is then attached to the canvas fabric underneath so that it does not separate.
The craftsman cuts the black fabric by hand to reveal the pattern and the base fabric, which is the canvas.
The cut fabric is then hand-sewn onto the canvas. This operation is carried out with great care and skill.
The red and yellow motif on the cushion cover is hand-embroidered directly onto the cover.
The cutwork technique is used mainly in the Indian state of Rajasthan and in Kutch, in the state of Gujarat.
Cutwork and hand embroidery are used to make ralli quilts, bed covers, garments, cushion covers and other decorative items.
Leya's meticulous, subtle finishes highlight the excellence of its craftsmanship.
