Read more of the storyIntroducing the ELHEI: a homage to fantasy, an ode to colour, a celebration of Moroccan craftsmanship in all its splendour. The halfa used to craft the ELHEI is a favourite of Moroccan artisans. The plant, which is found in the eastern part of Morocco, on the border of Algeria, is first dried and sorted according to size.
The wide strips are boiled to increase the ease with which they can be manipulated, and then fashioned by hand to create the signature shapes that make the ELHEI so fascinating.
Next, needles are used to weave the fine strips onto these shapes to add detail to the materials and create patterns. Finally, once the pieces have been assembled with bits of wool, the ELHEI is embroidered one last time with wool in one of eight vibrant colours. Handcrafted by 20 women at a rural farm located in Oued El-Heimer, the ELHEI was so named as a tribute to these women.
Like any piece of art, the ELHEI is unique—each version is inspired by the imagination of its creators. The colours, the shapes, the braiding—no two pieces are ever exactly the same
