Interview

Lucy Barlow, Creative Director of Barlow & Barlow

In the first of our tastemaker series, profiling the leading names in the world of interiors about travel, their homes and everything in between, we speak to Lucy Barlow of Barlow & Barlow. Lucy studied fashion before attending the Inchbald School of Design. Alongside brother Max, Lucy founded London-based Barlow & Barlow in 2013. Today, she runs the practice with her husband, architect Joshua Sear. Barlow & Barlow offer a complete interior architecture, decoration and lighting service with a focus on flair, boldness and art.

Where is home, and what does it mean to you ?

London, Notting Hill - home is everything; your sanctuary, your happy place and a space to be as creative as you choose to be with it!

A favourite room and why?

My son’s nursery - due to some very boring building issues it was only just finished the day I came back from hospital with him so the stress surrounding it was not ideal but the outcome is so beautiful and makes us all so happy!

Most treasured piece or souvenir you brought home?

When we come home from our family house in North Wales we always drive back past the antique dealer Drew Pritchard’s beautiful showroom in Conway. Last year I came home with a two-metre wide mackerel painted in oil pastels on plasterboard. It’s now inset into the wall above our dining table and has become such a feature of our house that I can’t really remember life without it!

What are your favourite Caravane pieces ?

  • Divan Princesse - For some laid back rustic charm this layered divan in earthy tones not only looks so cosy but also very cool - I can just picture it in someone’s very glam Ibizan finca

    •
    • Plaid Pied de Poule - Who doesn’t love a bit of plaid and these throws would be so useful draped on a lovely loose linen sofa or taken outside for long lunches or used to wrap up warm with drinks that go late into the night

Inspirer

  • Tres Tre - I love floor lamps with multiple bulbs - there is something quite mid-century and a little bit brutalist which I really like

  •
  • Suzi - I just adore Suzani’s and this cushion would brighten up any scheme

  •
  • Pouf caillou - This is a fabulous ottoman, the organic shape makes it instantly a bit cooler than something more twee and the monochrome plaid fabric is really striking

A place Caravane makes you think about

Gosh the Caravane edit really takes me on a journey from the block printed tents of Rajasthan to the organic styles of Ubud to long lunches in Provence - really it’s quite a joyful journey :-)

A country that inspires you the most

Italy always!

2021 colour palette?

I feel like yellow is having a real moment - from bright summery citrine to more wintery mustards. It's probably harder to use within the fashion industry but it’s a fantastic interiors colour!
